You might laugh, but it's the truth. I was quite shocked when pezus and outlawauron confirmed to me that nowadays patches are the norm for pretty much every major game.

He's right to laugh. NSMBU, Nintendo Land and Pikmin 3 have all required patches, and for Pikmin 3 it was day one! And lets not even get into the OS, which after a large slow potentially bricking day one update and a second large update is still unfinished. The idea Nintendo is setting any standards in this respect is laughable.

I don't think any of those patches were for bug fixes like it's common practice on other consoles. Thus none of those patches were required. What did they add? Pro Controller support for NSMBU, no idea for Nintendo Land and I had already played through Pikmin 3 before connecting online (which didn't work before day 1 anyway, because the servers weren't available).

Although it's true that Nintendo is going down a dangerous path with the Wii U. The system as a whole feels as sloppy as a 360 or PS3 which I consider one of the reasons why the system doesn't sell. And if even Nintendo fans aren't buying it, then I see it as perfectly justified to say that people who are used to Nintendo products have higher standards (I didn't say that Nintendo is setting high standards, I said that costumers have high standards). But just because the Wii U is trash doesn't mean that any of the current costumers should be obligated to sink even lower and buy third party games. Also, Splinter Cell is an example of a game that got a patch to work properly (about 1.6GB IIRC), Nintendo software has yet to fall to such a level.

NSMBU has had 3 updates already, so while they aren't releasing broken games (yet) they are now comfortable releasing unfinished games. Whether or not Nintendo customers who don't own the Wii U have higher standards is irrelevant, as they obviously aren't going to be buying Wii U games. And anyone who owns a Wii U can't claim to have high standards anymore. This is a system releasing 6-7 years after the PS3 & 360, yet markedly slower with promised features still missing.
