Nintendo should have started taking big steps towards real self sufficiency a looong time ago.

It´s been clear, for quite some time, that chances are slim a Nintendo home console will ever see again the kind of 3rd party support the NES and SNES had.

What they need is truly being self sufficient, not depend on anyone but themselves to carry the system, while avoiding these huge fucking droughts. They need to have the capacity and manpower to be able to release their games at a much quicker pace while maintaining the quality a lot of people have come to expect from them.

Pretty hard, but they have to do it.

Or actually release a real, full-blown next-gen console, based on the x86 architecture, with 8GB RAM and a good GPU... Crazy, I know...

yes because sony and microsoft from the start ALWAYS planned to gave 8gb of ram. This was a last hour decision. we all seen the articles where PS4 started with 4 then microsoft had to match the 8.

Also do you magically thing Nintendo would get 3rd party support? It wouldn't gurantee it. THe fact is they gambled on the controller again and that csot them the money. Just like the kinect has pushed up the price of the xbox one.

Does this matter? Such a console wouldn't be released a year ago, so they'd know what the competition is up to and could add RAM just like Sony did. Heck, Nintendo could (should?) just kill Wii U if it keeps on selling worse than GCN and release a proper console in say 1.5-2 years that would be good enough to compete with PS4/XO. Only this time they should prepare some 1st party games for the launch. They did that with GBA and I don't think they regret it.

Yes, this would guarantee 3rd party support, as it would solve Wii U's biggest problem - that contrary to the BS Reggie kept talking after the reveal and release of Wii U, this console just won't give you the proper, mainstream next gen experience, cause it's too underpowered. It's not future proof and all gamers know it. We know it's the Wii all over again and people aren't willing to miss out on what the whole industry has to offer just to play Nintendo games. If Wii U was on par with PS4/XO and had N exclusives it would be a viable choice. It's not at this point. I'm a good example here - Wii was my first console, I only bought PS3 a few years later and I regret buying them in this order. When I got my PS3 I realised how much I was missing out on. This gen I won't repeat that mistake and I'll buy PS4 first and get a Wii U once it drops to 200 or even lower. And Nintendo only has itself to blame for this.

If anybody brings back the GCN argument - remember that GCN was sold in times when 3rd party exclusives were the norm. The times are different now, that policy is impossible to maintain today so such a Wii U would easily get regular quality ports (also thanks to the architecture). The only difference would be in the 1st party titles and we could finally see who is boss - Mario, Master Chief or the GT car ;)

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
