It's close to classic SMT, i.e. Strange Journey. For the dungeon parts anyways.
I full voice is a nice touch.

Was looking at Strange Journey a couple of years ago, but didn't care enough to pursue an import copy. So Soul Hackers is a game where you have to draw your own map? Not sure if I can warm up to the demon fusing, but otherwise it looks like a game that is at least worth to keep in mind and pick up eventually.

Read my previous comment.  I edited my post to include your quote.  And no, you don't draw your own map.  It auto maps.  You can turn off an app so that it doesn't auto map and you just won't have a map.  Then you could draw your own map on paper if you wanted to.

Also, I'd get Strange Journey.  I haven't played it, but from what I've seen and heard, the game is alot better.  If you're not into demon fusion though, then I'd recommend Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2.  SMT Nocturne/SMT gameplay with a different way to learn skills, no fusions, get extra skills by switching mantras.  The Persona games as well, but they do have card fusion, so still sort of like demon fusion, but it's better than in Soul Hackers.
