$299 isn't "low" either IMO, it's still expensive, especially for a console that's trying to appeal to kids/parents. The Wii U/PS3/360 are all overpriced, but Nintendo is kinda stuck because they seem to be getting bent over on the controller's component costs and unwisely invested a lot of R&D is making a machine pointlessly electricity efficient (likely ensuring they pay top dollar dollar for a very propietary machine that delivers fairly mediocre performance for a 2012 non-portable device).

A $50 (retail price) 6570 AMD GPU likely outperforms the Wii U considerably (600+ TFLOP performance).
