I think his point is that there's an obvious flaw, either in the study or in the way the results are presented. Look at this sentence:
Over 60 percent of consumers said they had been put off buying a next-generation disk player due to the presence of two formats in the market
This sentence implies that at the very least, 60 percent of consumers know there were two formats in the market. It doesn't seem realistic to me.
