It is very impressive. I am curious as to who these people are that bought it. This year or so have watched dozens of titles sell much less than hopped with few cracking seven figures (some even flopped at 5 figures). Yet, here comes GTA V smashing through 8 and likely 9 figures. So either a ton of people only bought this or it has such massive cross appeal that every group bought it.

In any event, good for the industry to show such a block buster game is still possible.

The difference between GTA and other games is that they are not trying to milk every $ out of you by releasing a new version every year or so...

Many games that flopped that I had hopes for were brand new entries (Wonderful 101 and Puppeteer are recent example just this past month).

If anything, the series that do milk (CoD, BF, AC, NFL, FIFA) seem to find great success while something like Sly Cooper after long hiatus barely makes a dent.

I am just always curious as my expectations for sales has been lowered  a lot lately then GTA V comes along and stuns me with success I simply did not think possible.

To be honest some of those series that milk do not do as well financially as their sales number let you believe.

What makes CoD and GTA so good is that the games are hardly discounted and the publishers get to sell the games at full price or close to it, even more than 6 months after the original game release ( I couldn't find a pre-order for GTA5 that offered a discount). This is very good, especially seeing how late we are in the console cycle. ( average game sell price goes down as the cycle gets older as new games have to compete with older discounted games).

If you look at BF and especially AC it's another story however.

Every year it's very common to find the latest AC title discounted up to 40% less than a month after its release. BF had the same issue ( heck PS+ gave away BF3 recently). So while those titles move copies ( especially AC), they do not do so at full price, far from it. Which is why in my view it is wrong to put AC in the same category as those others games.  AC does ok but it's a big smoke and mirror game by Ubisoft as they have to discount the game very heavilly every year to make it sell so well....
