It is very impressive. I am curious as to who these people are that bought it. This year or so have watched dozens of titles sell much less than hopped with few cracking seven figures (some even flopped at 5 figures). Yet, here comes GTA V smashing through 8 and likely 9 figures. So either a ton of people only bought this or it has such massive cross appeal that every group bought it.

In any event, good for the industry to show such a block buster game is still possible.

The difference between GTA and other games is that they are not trying to milk every $ out of you by releasing a new version every year or so...

Precisely, the 1 game per 5 year model is far more sustainable than the CoD model. I know they could have made more money, but instead that helped with titles like Read Dead that went on to sell plenty.

I imagine their model will change slightly though. GTA Online is going to change a lot of things AND we are all going to be paying for expansions packs to bring in Las Venturas and San Fierro, but I for one am happy to do that. I always get high quality, fun and interesting games to play, so let them take their time, just ideally not quite so long next time!

Yes at some point players will get bored with CoD. It's not a question of why but when, and Activision is doing nothing to prepare for the next franchise.

Meanwhile TTWO is keeping GTA healthy by letting more time go between the releases and trying to develop new franchises and while Borderlands, Bioshock or Red Dead Redemption are nowhere as big as GTA or CoD, they have now become relevant profitable franchises...
