I really hope that Nintendo gets its act together, but I think it may be too late for the Wii U.

It should have launched Xmas of 2010. It should have had games released in the first year, and not just a handful, it shouldn't have been called Wii U (Wii 2, Wii HD, or something else), it shouldn't have looked so similar to the original Wii, it should have had a multitouch screen, etc. The mistakes are legion.

Since it is trailing the GameCube by a mile in weekly and monthly sales and that system had lots of games, next-gen graphics parity, and a $199 price tag at launch (and a $149 price tag at this point in its life), I am not hopeful.

While I agree that an earlier release wouldn´t have been a bad idea and earlier rumors hinted an spring 2012 launch, which explains games ("late ports") like Ninja Gaiden 3, Batman and Darksiders2 for WiiU. But we have to take into account the situation the 3DS was in 2011 which probably lead to the delay. Also I don´t think 2 new systems launches in the same timeframe would have been a great idea either.

The PS4 won´t release before Feb 22 anyway, so I don´t really see how it can be too late for WiiU. This really reminds me alot of the early assumptions that 3DS was a flop and that PSV would take the handheld market. Nintendo has a good chance to have a decent holiday season in Japan and there still are options like software releases (Mario Kart) and a price drop next year to turn things around. And to be honest, I don´t think PS4 will be a runaway success in 2014 and games that could make a difference like the SquareEnix games likely won´t be out before 2015.
