Have you read the books?
The Lord of the Rings books have no where near as much "heart" as the movies, it was much more dramatic in the movies. The LOTR has a much more epic story than the Hobbit, but if you are talking about "melodramatic" stuff then Hollywood made some changes to the Hobbit that make it more...cliche I guess you could say (which I personally hate).
But is just the nature of the books, LOTR has a bigger and more deep story than the Hobbit, the latter is more like an adventure and not really an epic quest.
I guess you could blame Tolkien lol.
