This could be maybe the shortest lifespan Nintendo homeconsole. Sales are not in favor of the device, and maybe the company will use this excuse to move support to the next one.
As far as I remember, Iwata told during an investor meeting that R/D is working on tools that will be useful for portables and homeconsole. This should help to reduce the time for development and experience will be the same for both.
Considering this, Nintendo could be planning the 3DS suceessor (which it isn't firing the charts in the west) with a lot of software and the next console with the same tools.
