JEMC said: If I'm honest, all this excitement over those headsets or glasses mean nothing to me. It's not something I'm interested. With that said, and respecting the work that those guys at Nvidia are doing, I see those glasses as something useless... in games, of course. You see, one of the biggest reasons for the Oculus or Sony's devices is increasing immersion in games. Big (fake) screens in front of your eyes, dolby stereo (or whatever), motion tracking sensors to change the in-game camera, etc. All those things go in the direction of improving immersion. That's also the reason why they are headsets and not glasses, to separate you (at least your eyes and ears) from the real world. But what kind of immersion will you get from those "sunglasses" when you can still see and hear everything surrounding you? I hope Mark Rein is hyped about something else (maybe Nvidia is launching their own console Steambox to pair it with Shield?), otherwise this seems just pointless. |
I have my doubts about the VR headset future myself. I haven't really been sold on actually buying a product anyway. The concept is appealing in a sci-fi nerd way for sure, but actually playing games that way for many hours? I am not sure that it will be more than a novelty. Light-field displays are also somthing that interests me in a nerdy "that is some cool tech" way as well that I have my doubts of it's practicality. Especially in real-time rendering as the different lightfields required will no doubt have a pretty big performance impact (which is probably why Nvidia are interested in it lol).
Who knows what Mark Rain actually saw tho, could be anything lol. Nvidia work on a lot of weird stuff these days.
