Sorry you're not enjoying the Wii U so far, Richard. Maybe different games from different genres would help you enjoy it more?
My advice would be not to worry too much about the GamePad. A lot of Wii U games come with several different controller configurations -- more than most home consoles -- so you can often replace the GamePad with a Pro Controller or the traditional Wii Remote.
If you're genuinely finding that the GamePad detracts from the Wii U games you're playing, I'm not sure what advice to give. Personally, I find that the GamePad either enhances the overall experience or has no impact whatsoever. I haven't run into a situation where the GamePad makes me want to stop playing a game.
Anyway, good luck! I hope you find a Wii U game you like.
