This wasn't the case, but you have a point regarding society protocol. When in doubt, people naturally favor the more physically attractive person. When I used to visit Yahoo message boards (the cesspool of the Earth), almost every guy turned into a virtual basass or white knight while hiding behind a keyboard, in an attempt to get a woman in the sack.
