But they will still most likely be throw away games still, not the big budget consoles games most around here enjoy.

Huh?

Steam on a Windows tablet won't provide big budget games?

well now your bluring the lines between tablets and laptops, although the distinctions are getting less and less, thanks to windows 8

Its not me blurring the lines, its the market.  A laptop hybrid or surface-pro-like device will have very good specs within a very short time frame.

hdmi out to a large TV and a wireless controller and you have a pc, laptop, tablet and powerful gaming device in one small package, home and away.

Have to be more powerfull to match the quality in games tho, what with all the overheads windows and apis for not being a dedicated specfication.

I also think it might be more than a couple of years before we see them shipping with graphics memory than can match a unified 5GB.

Processing power will be soon tho.

I have a Surface pro and I put steam on it.  I have been playing Skyrim and sim city just fine.  I have an HDMI output and watch movies and have played a games on it.  I have other devices for that right now.  I am not sure if we will see enough of a jump this year, but I would guess that the Surface 3 that comes out at the end of next year will be pretty close.

The thing that people should fear more for consoles is that they are both now x86.  Now, any game can easily be ported to Windows(especially XB1 games)  So, within 3 years when the PS360 support is basically gone, a lot of the games will be PC and PS4 or PC and XB1.  The real need for the consoles will only diminsh progressively from there.

Not really desktop sales are in decline, people wanting games will still get the cheaper console and more than likley a cheap tablet for web browsing.

I was referring to the whole batch of tablets that are now running full versions of Windows 8.1(NOT  Windows RT) that are releasing in the next few months.  That will only grow more and more that Intel is focusing on tablet and smartphone processors.  The IOS/Android tide on these devices is begining to subside.  M$ has a long road ahead, but people follow what they use at work very often.  M$ is working overtime to convert the business crowd to Windows 8.1 and to implement windows 8.1 tablets into those environments.  The next 18 months will be very interesting.
