I think the Wii really would have been able to go much higher, if circumstances were different. Outside of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the number of games that came out for it that you could call system sellers dropped off a cliff. Also, I don't know what genius decided to end their brilliant 'Wii would like to play' marketing campaign, but I rarely saw any actual TV ads for the Wii in the last four or so years either.
tl;dr, Nintendo shot themselves in the foot halfway through the system's life cycle.
