Before Alaska ruined the party, the highest and lowest places were in the same COUNTY in California. (Death Valley and Mt. Shasta in Shasta County.) At least that's what I heard.
My parents were actually on vacation in a national park in Colorado, after they packed up the tent in the heavy rain they wanted to go east but had to exit the park to the WEST (and go west for 100 miles before circling south) because everything else was flooding ... after they left, the park shut down.
