Nintendo needs to work with more third parties to make sure their platforms get this type of surge more often.
Not only does it help the game but other third parties look at it and go "gee, I guess something not made by Nintendo can really sell huge numbers".
I think Nintendo doesn't want to do it because they are afraid it may trigger bidding wars with Sony/MS, but the fact is you can't run your business always afraid of what the other guys may or may not do. They moneyhat content all the time, Nintendo's approach of being hands off and trying to impress third parties with an install base and high Mario sales doesn't speak to third parties.
Also, I'd say it's time for Nintendo to maybe go for bigger third party collaborations, not small ones. Pokemon x Final Fantasy or something is going to sell a heckuva lot more hardware and software than Pokemon Conquest (collaboration with Nobunuga's Ambition franchise).
Lets gets FF7/8/9 on the 3DS and maybe home play HD versions on the Wii U. Gotta keep it going.
