Draw a circle around the helmet to pick it up. Drawing circles is a thing to remember.

I didn't notice a difference in controls between demo and full game. You should be able to use the touch screen or the right stick as you wish. Maybe you pressed the minus button twice and thus are using picture in picture mode for both screens which prevents you from using the touch screen.
