"The Wii pushes anamorphic widescreen at 480p. It outputs most likely at 640x480."

Link, please?

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46169 is the best source I could find.

"games like mario, metroid... are 640x448 or 640x456 in 16/9 mode"

This is the same guy who revealed that Halo 3 was rendering at 640p.

Granted, it's not an "official" source, but it's a good forum to browse for technical talkings.

That doesn't mean the wii can't produce higher resoluitions in te future.

Did you read the thread?  The Wii has a 2MB frame buffer.  The other 1.1MB is used for texture caching and vertex caching.  A 1280x720 image is 921,600 pixels.  Assuming a 24-bit image, that means the frame buffer would need to be at least 2,764,800 bytes, more than what the Wii has.  I guess it could render a lower resolution image, and upscale it to 720p, like many XBox360/PS3 games, but I doubt it has the hardware to do so or capactiy to do so.

Don't get me wrong guys.  I don't think Super Mario Galaxy has hit the peak power of the Wii (and I personally think Super Mario Galaxy looks great, even on my 1080p LCD TV).  But let's not get too far fetched with our ideas on how powerful the Wii is.   I'm just trying to keep things realistic.
