The problem is this: Nintendo thinks that people love Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong. People could not care less for this. What people loved was the inovation these games brought to the table back in the day. - The worlds and plataforming of Mario were cool in the 80´s - The adventure of little Link on Zelda was compelling. - The mistery and atmosphere of Metroid - the beautiful graphics of Donkey Kong. That is why the WII sold so well, it was brand new, motion controllers and everything. Of course, in the end people got a little bored, but they got hooked first, and, in bussiness, that is quite enough sometimes. Now Nintendo gives a DS game with HD graphics and call it a new Mario, put Luigi in the same game and call it a brand new release. I know these games are obligatory, Nintendo HAS to make them because that is what made them back in the day. So, as I see, Nintendo has 2 options: Be a kiddy console, for the children, or, change the pace, pretty fast. I think, however, that most of us subestimate the appeal of the first option. If I had a kid, I would give him a WIIU with a bunch of kiddy games, and it is perfect, because none of his friends would have the console, so no one would loan him CALL OF DUTY or other violent games. I don´t know what the future holds for Nintendo, but as I see it now, old school franchises will grant them nothing but a moderate success.
That said, GTA5 is not on the WiiU because rockstar would never release a half baked port like others devs do. And, the install base do not justify the work. Just that.
