I believe GBA sold at a faster pace than 3DS. Also GC was selling better than Wii U in the same time.

Hmm it looks like. Then I don't get when people say it sold a lot in a few frame time.

Japan is what's saving the 3DS' bacon, in Japan the 3DS is the no.1 game platform, in the GBA days, the PS2 was still the "main platform" for gaming. Today console's had basically collapsed in Japan.

I agree, the 3DS's numbers have been average in the West, tho 2DS and pokemon might fix that for good.  Also Japan's handheld > console attitude is probably another reason for the PS4 delay in Japan.
