If it's no video games I think LEGO playsets (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, whatever) generally are a pretty safe bet for that age range.
EDIT: Star Wars lightsaber was a good choice. With the new trilogy coming (hopefully it won't suck like the last one), it's good to get him into the series now.
