The purpose was to separate itself from the PS4/XO in terms of price for those who hold that to be an issue. This is generally a factor that is only really important over Christmas, when cost-conscious parents are the ones doing the buying. In that regard, it might help.
I also don't think Nintendo should sell consoles at much of a loss, even if that means losing market share. With their current model of being cheaper with lower system specs, it's better that they carve out their own niche instead of trying to compete directly. I think a lot of Nintendo fans just need to accept that most Nintendo consoles are going to settle closer to N64 numbers than to Wii numbers.
As for buying one, no. Other than Project X, I don't see much on Nintendo's horizon that interests me.
