The other day someone here nailed it perfectly: PS4 is cheaper.
If the PS4 was the one costing $100 extra, our brains would be ok labeling it the premium graphics machine. The tables are turned though. PS4 having the premium graphics while having a bargain price just doesn't mesh with our perception of value. PlayStation 4 fans think is really cool and don't want this belief in premium graphics taken away from them. This is also why it's so important for most xbox one fans to believe the difference doesn't exist, or with the dGPU favors the xbox one. They are paying a premium and want to feel that they're getting premium graphics too.
It's like the perfect recipe for console warz.
PS. Diminishing returns don't exist here. Next gen, even wii u, will make the best games of today look very very bad.
