You do need to take into consideration the fact that gaming is much more mainstream now though. Wii Sports and Wii being a big phenomenon with people not traditiaonlly "Gamers", was a big part of those sales. The NES sold 3 or more times what Atari or any other competitor was selling in the 80s, and it did it at a time when gaming was not mainstream, and it was something considered "for kids or nerds who never grew up". Taken in that context, Super Mario Bros. got popular in a much more harsh environment/market.
