I don't view that as much of a positive if there's no audience for that style of game to begin with there.

Similar types of games tend to help other types of games IMO, Saints Row is helped by GTA, Destiny will be helped by the other FPS games, Wii Sports/Party helped other party games on Wii, etc. etc. etc.

As long as you don't release the games too close to each other it's generally not a problem.

Everything has to start somewhere, how did GTA style games and FPS become popular in the beginning?

GTA appealled pretty strongly to the tastes of the PS2 audience, being surprised that GTA could be successful on the PS2 would be like being surprised that something like Just Dance might do well on the Wii. Those types of franchsies just fit the main demographic of those consoles pretty well.

And how does a console become appealing to a certain demographic? U act as if Playstation and Xbox brands were created and instantly appealed to those demographics based off name alone. There had to be a start to those brands becoming popular amongst fans of certain genres. If not for GTA being a huge success, maybe games like True Crimes, Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs would have never been created. Or if Halo wasnt released on Xbox at launch then maybe Xbox would have never became known as a console for shooter fans.

The only way for Nintendo to get fans of games like Bayonetta is to have games like Bayonetta release on Nintendo consoles, its that simple. For all we know Nintendo is negotiating to revive games like Golden Axe and Shinobi as exclusives, making Wii U the console of choice for Hack n Slash games then when the next Darksiders, Ninja Gaiden or Dynasty Warriors release they sell best on Wii U.

To a good degree actually the Playstation and XBox brands were created and did instantly appeal to the male teenager/20 something. Virtually all the marketing for those platforms from day 1 was centered on that demographic and most of the major games from the get go were too -- Tekken, Ridge Racer, WipeOut, NFL GameDay, etc.

Ditto for the XBox with Halo, Dead Or Alive, etc. All these types of games were perfectly in sync with the target audience that Sony/MS devoted virtually all their energy in aiming on early on.

It's very hard to just one game with likely very minimal marketing to alone create an entire audience on a platform when the platform of choice is largely marketed to a different type of audience primarily and doesn't have many similar games. Sony has the same problem on their platforms too, something like Tear-away, which looks like a good game, will probably not sell so hot.

MS was able to break into the family/casual market with Kinect but had to expend a tremendous amount of marketing dollars to do so, if they had not, it probably would've ended up like Move. You can certainly cross into different audiences. It's just not easy. Bayonetta 2 to Nintendo is what Knack is to Sony ... it's a "hey we do games of all types" proof of concept title for the library, which likely won't be marketed all that much because both company's know that type of product is a tough sell.

Right now I guess in Nintendo's case, a lot of software is a tough sell because the primary buyer of the Wii U to date IMO are the hardcore Nintendo loyalsts who want their Mario/Zelda/DK fix and they're awfully grumpy right now and seemingly not in the mood to give things like Wonderful 101 a chance. I would love if Wonderful 101 sold 2+ million copies and Bayonetta 2 sold 5+ million, but what I want and where the market is at are two very different things unfortunately. I will be buying both anyway.

I agree with u that Bayonetta wont lure in core gamers on its own but we have two other core centric titles in X and SMTxFE plus Nintendo could always announce more since im sure they have plenty of projects we dont know about. It seema like Nintendo isnt trying to capture the shooter/sports/racing mainstream gamer but rather the niche hardcore gamer. If they can appeal to those gamers and get games like W101, Bayo, X, SMTxFE and other niche core games to sell 500k-1.5m then id say they accomplished there goal. That would make Wii U a console for Nintendo fans, kids, families, casuals and niche hardcore gamers.
