I've seen a lot of new gamers come to the Wii as their first console as it interested them, a lot of lapsed gamers (like me) who got very bored of the same game with bigger textures and more ellaborate death animations come to the wii and a lot of people with 360's looking for something to compliment their existing console.
Where I work, in a very technology intensive sector in the UK a lot of people in my office have bought the Wii, probably about 20, around 6 have the 360 and I know one person with a PS3, but he isn't into videogames he just bought one at launch and when he went round expecting everyone to be impressed they just looked bemused.
Where I live is very near a large rural area with some small local pubs, they don't have room for bowling (or much else) but so many of them have installed Wii's and have bowling there on regular occasions, even inter pub match ups... The locals have all bought Wii's to practice at home, it's insanely popular and it's played a lot. They are also starting to move past Wii sports and onto other titles.
