I'm not sure why people are assuming Sony paid for this timed exclusive when we've for the last few months heard nothing but bad things about how MS don't allow easy updates or don't allow cross platform play or just the basic thing of Free To Play games being behind a paywall, ignoring the self publishing thing which still isn't all there. This reads more along the lines of Sony being able to give a developer of a F2P game, the opportunity to release their game to a bigger audience and they took it, while MS and their policies meant the developer couldn't do that. Now things have changed and it'll just take time to redo it for a new console.
