Because of the LEDs. It's impossible to display 8 when only two leds are active and you just have numbers 1 - 4. 

No it's not. I'm pretty sure it's some bluetooth thing. You can only connect 6 controllers if you have a wireless headset connected.

The wireless headset gets a controller number, even if it's not a controller. If you play alone, it gets number 2, if you play with a friend, it gets number 3. You'll never notice, but with 6 people, it gets number 7.

Now, if you play with 2 people and 2 headsets, the headsets get number 3 and 4. 

Bluetooth itself does not have a limit for devices.
