They move at a sluggish pace and a handful of Japanese companies are truly moving forward at the pace the west is going. Most Japanese companies are just harnessing current gen tech and X is a good example of that.


I think it's less about tech and more about mechanics, style, and moving away from what Japanese developers are used.

The Japanese will always have their eye on mechanics much like the west, its just about having it move more fluid in a next gen realm. This is one of the reason even Sony Japan has been having problems. The Japanese have to figure out how to make it work in a balanced manner because they are always pushing the boundaries of how things naturally work. Westerners generally stay within that box. The western branch of Sony is running the show and Japan is struggling to figure things out themselves.
