And I'll add that Nintendo has to have a way to deliver their announcements first hand so that the second hand can't chop it up and spin it so much. Nintendo also needs a free online publication for news, reviews, and previews to showcase their products in a favorable light since the second hand news sources don't do Nintendo any favors.
Last, Nintendo has a very successful handheld with eshop that also advertises Directs. So not just Wii U owners have instant access. 3DS audience will watch the Nintendo Directs too. But man that tropical freeze slurpee idea should get a prize curl-6. Some super mario cats Happy meals too.
