You are correct, the new hardware should somehow add an element(s) to the experience (what I meant by new gameplay) that wasn't possible on previous generation hardware. My point was, aside from the HD graphics the WiiU games could be run on Wii without compromising anything really.

But anyway, the biggest hurdle is certainly the price of the hardware. It's just a box to play the games and everyone (aside from people who masturbate to hardware) would rather spend more money on games. I don't agree with your line of thought that the Wii U and 3DS are substitutes for each other. Home consoles and handhelds have different purposes. Let's take Super Smash Bros., for example. You say it would be cheaper to get a 3DS for it, but are you going to play the game all on your own or would you rather have local multiplayer for a game like this? Unless you live in Japan, it should be much easier to set up local multiplayer with a home console. One system with four controllers instead of four handhelds with four copies of the game for fully featured multiplayer. Although in the end it really depends on your gaming habits that make either a home console or a handheld a more valuable purchase.

Unless I'm mistaken multiple people could play off one 3DS game, as long as they all have a 3DS and are in the same room, could they not?  I know DS did this.  For me specifically my friends/family are all in the same boat.  We all had Wiis.  No one owns WiiU.  Some have 3DSs already and others will likely purchase it to play Smash Bros.  So with a 3DS I have a built in friends list of people to play local or online.   WiiU?  Only when they visit.   And yes, 3DS is cheaper.

O_o it that what happened to Gnac?!  At least it was for a worthy cause.

But that's besides the point. Other M isn't a 2D Metroid, just like Super Mario 3D Land and World aren't 2D games either.

1) There's a reason why I said "fully featured multiplayer". Download play for demanding games is limited to fewer options for the people who don't have a copy of the game. In the case of Super Smash Bros., download play will probably only offer a limited set of smaller stages and a small selection of characters to play with. Nothing else to say though; the 3DS certainly looks like the better option for you right now. Well, it doesn't mean that the Wii U will never be interesting. It's still year 1 for the system, the price will come down and the library will grow as time passes by.

True - We'll see.  I never played on consoles before Wii and I now have a stupid large backlog of Wii games, so far no next gen system are eally offering anything 'new' so I'll probably just get around to finishing my backlog over the next five years (plus games on PC/mobile and possibly 3DS)

2) They are 3D. If it's free movement on three axis in 3D environments, then it's definitely a 3D game.

It's been a while since I played Other M but I don't remember free movement on three axis, it was pretty much 2D (in a 3D environment) with fixed FPS elements.
