Not at all! The name (2DS) is horrible, maybe that's what you're referring to. But even without the 3D, the difference between the DSi and the 3DS is as great as the difference between the N64 and the GameCube. It's a completely different console.

Yes, it's mainly a naming and public perception problem, I know 3DS is different, but as they put "3D" in its name, it was like declaring 3D is its main and distinctive feature, then that "3" read separated from "DS" makes it look also as it is a 3rd evolution, DS being the first and DSi the 2nd (as it is BC, but it also has its own games not compatible with DS), so stripping the 3D away and putting a 2 instead of a 3 in the name, makes it look as if they went back to the previous version for two reasons, not just one.
As that "3" in the name can be read both as 3rd DS and 3D DS, finding a name for a 2D version of it while at the same time making it clear it's still the latest gen console and not a previous gen one is probably a problem without a satisfying solution.
