What are you on about?  Superman is early to mid 30's and Batman is late 30's to early 40's.  Depends on the story.  Superman is the first hero to go public (again, depending on the story--lately, the JSA are just assumed to have been at it decades before...and don't get me started on the New 52) and Batman has been in the business longer.  Supeman represents the best in humanity, is all powerful, and moral but he's an alien.  Batman represents the best in humanity because of his motivation and intelligence.

It's God vs Human.

Batman is able to compete with Superman because he's able to out-think Superman.  He's been doing it longer and he always has a plan.  That's it.  I don't know where you got "mentor" out of all of that.  Batman is older, wiser, and less naive.  That's it.  That's why Batman is a valued member of the Justice League despite having no powers.  He's got the best mind on the team.

Thats not much of an age difference. If they really wanted to hammer home the "seasoned batman" idea they should have gotten an actor in their late 40's early 50's. In MoS they made superman 33, I guess to drive home the Jesus allegory even more than they already were with damn near every other scene. 33 is not a little boy, he shouldn't be dumb and naive.

I got "mentor" because that is the word thats been getting thrown around a lot. I don't have a problem with batman being a more experienced crime fighter, I just don't like the idea that he would need to teach Superman like hes Clarks Obi Wan, they got two different styles and thats the way it should be.
