Hm, MS's actions are heavily influenced by shareholder interests as we can see by Ballmers latest announcement, so I can only assume shareholders might not be too happy if large amounts of money were used to gain control of a seemingly not very lucrative market (well Nintendo did have some very good years, but apart from that?).

I'm sure he'd rather put his money into charity rather than use it to please a few petty Xbox fanboys.

OT: I'm sure many people said that the Xbox 360 wouldn't convert PS2 fans. PS4 has done a great job of winning support so far and pre-orders show this. As long as they can keep the momentum, there isn't much stopping them from taking back a fair amount of gamers who had a 360 last gen.
