In a PvP environment based on grinding, microtransaction ARE pay-to-win, as those decked out with better gear keep those trying to progress naturally from ... winning. Since winning is almost always linked to gaining Exp at a faster rate, this acts like a lead weight on the player who did not pay.
However, though I still don't care for the system, a lot of my objections are mitigated if there is no PvP. I wasn't aware of that. If it's all co-op then that's a lot more acceptable.
