Among other consoles, it's highly likely that Genesis sales here on VGC's platform totals aren't correct. That 29.8 number is from the last time SEGA mentioned the system's sales. However, the Genesis wasn't done selling yet. It's pretty well known that the Genesis and SNES were in close competition, which means they were much closer in sales. It's more likely it sold somewhere towards the 40m mark, but there's no way to know for sure. Wikipedia estimates, from various sources which may or may not be correct, the Genesis to have sold some 35.4m to 41.9m depending on what's counted.

OT: The 3DS will surpass the SNES during of summer next year. Basically because of JWeinCom's reasons.
