Hmmmm...interesting. I thought the cause of Sega freaking out though was because Sony revealed a much lower price point than both Nintendo and Sega for their consoles and they couldnt compete. When Sony revealed their stance and offerings, Sega blinsided everyone by launching months ahead of time and with limited consoles to boot. They pissed off consumers, retailers and developers who werent prepared to properly launch for them.
I guess its a little bit of both.

Also, Sonys games were twenty dollars cheaper than Nintendos games.
