That's the problem though, we want fresh experiences with each 3D Mario game, not a 3D version heavily based on 2D platformers from the past (the term "fresh" is used loosely, because they are still Mario games). 3D Land is a great game, but it doesn't have that open feeling of games like SM64 or SMS. Even Mario Galaxy had some opened feeling to the levels, despite being somewhat linear. 3D World is 3D Land with HD, multiplayer and new levels, and each level is timed, it just doesn't have the feeling of a full console 3D Mario game. 8 directional movement makes it even worse.

And they already went back to their roots...with 3D Land, 3D World essentially went back to a game that went back to its roots.
