2D Mario and 3D Mario don't need to be mixed though; 3D Mario was great on its own terms, the addition of 2D Mario conventions is unnecessary and doesn't improve it.

Its not mixing it, its classic Mario in a 3D environment. The 3D titles on N64/GC/Wii are essentially spin off since they are nothing at all like traditional Mario.

Classic Mario doesn't need 3D either. What works in 2D doesn't look like it works so well in 3D, in my view.

Ur right it doesnt need it, its just a way to keep it fresh while sticking to the basics. Did u play 3D Land? Regardless if u like it or not, it worked well.
