I think it's random really. I've have my slim since it originally came out and use it as a bluray player none stop. And play games regularly. It hasn't died. Propbably depends on the manufature. I've had my BR pc drives fail in one year. Because they where made by a certain company. Different brands too. A BR drive will always have two lens. A DVD needs its own lens. It can't use a blue laser to read. So a DVD will work even if the BR lens craps out.
