Sonic is the right answer. If the developers or publishers lose sight of what makes their series important, it can easily and quickly fall to total irrelevance.

The only saving grace being that a powerful brand *can* recover even from serious missteps or just a middling period of irrelevance. Tomb Raider bounced back neatly (despite Square Enix's over-lofty expectations), and Sonic is on the slow road to recovery after the twin disasters of Shadow and Sonic 06, precisely because the brands both have a lot of clout allowing people to give them a chance even after being burned (or merely bored) a few times.
