Like FifaGuy said, I think one should call it for what it is, an interactive movie. Nothing wrong with being that, but it bothers me if some people are defending its gameplay too heavily, instead of just defending the right for an interactive movie to exist.
Anyway, I am quite hyped for this game. I love the theme with the soul thing. It will be very interesting what they do of it. And hopefully you care for the characters like the OP claims, that's critical in a game like this.
At the very least I will buy Beyond when it has dropped in price.
