I have no idea if they are more fragile. All I know is I've had ps2 and Wii reading error problems, never on ps3. And I have a 300+ blu-ray collection next to games, it's getting plenty use.
If you can open it up maybe you can replace the drive with one from a dead ylod model. I've got one sitting on my shelf from a ylod phat model. I had to get the disc out after it died.
