I'd say it has a compelling storyline. It certainly isn't kiddy. If you leave one hole open in your defenses, you're either reloading the game or playing with a character that's permanently dead.
My main complaint with Radiant Dawn is that it has probably the worst music I've ever heard in a Nintendo game. Just turn it off for half the levels and you should survive.
