One thing's (almost) for sure - if a firmware update (accidentally or not) causes the Wii to brick when FreeLoader is used, you're out of luck with your warranty, since it's unsupported and unlicensed software.
Didn't Apple do something like that with the iPhone regarding unlocking software?
