And the funny thing is that u said you have over 70 hours on the game but there are lots of things you still have to discover.
About the boat, i read on other site that you have to upgrade your house at least once, than few days later (could be the day after, looks like it is random), Tortimer, an old turtle will apear on the town, talk to him and next day the boat to the island will be available.
And yes BF system is great.
