It's not just consoles it's everything.
Our hot water boiler had to be replaced a month ago, was leaking. I asked if they couldn't make these things more durable. Sure he said, but they are designed to last max 10 years, it's all about service these days. Meanwhile my grandmother's fridge still works. My 1982 Intellivision 2 still works, while we are on our 5th PVR since 2004. My grandfather's mirror reflex cameras still work, while my Canon 40D has the dreaded general error 99 after just 4 years, probably due to mirror assembly problem.
