But why should I do this when my new hardware can play my old games? Why keep all the consoles hooked up to TV? I really like the idea of BC, especially because my girlfriend already thinks we have too much techie-stuff.

You could just keep it in a box until you want to play some old games on it. Somewhere in a closet because let's be honest you won't want to play them until you get bored of the new games on your new console.
