It really isn't meant to make sense. For the changes to earth that have happened (namely continental re-alignment, as Australia has now rammed into Antarctica, the Indonesian islands seem to have shifted and South America seems to be going sideways, aside from the axis shifting about 90 degrees to make Antarctica into the Tropics, would have taken a long, long time to come to pass.
That amount of time, however, would destroy anything like what is left on Distant Planet: bowling balls, electrical currents, light bulbs, a car battery. Such things would have decayed into dust in that period of time.
